Disciples Women’s Ministries

First Christian Church women embrace opportunities to use their God-given talents by serving as deacons, elders, Governing Board members, and Executive Committee members; Sunday School and Bible School teachers; and adult Bible study and youth group leaders. In worship settings, women use their vocal and instrumental musical talents as well as their abilities as liturgists and speakers at vespers, Lenten devotionals, and Sunday morning services. Not so visible, perhaps, but very highly valued, are the women who serve in the FCC flower ministry by delivering flowers to shut-ins, hospital and nursing home patients, and others who are ill at home. FCC women contribute many volunteer hours at local charitable organizations and travel on annual adult mission trips as well as joining our youth on their mission trips and church camp adventures. A group from FCC participates annually in prison ministry at Luther Luckett Christian Church.

Men and women share the ministries listed above. However, the Disciples Women’s Ministries (DWM) is composed of only women. The Daytime Group meets the first Tuesday of each month from September through June at 1 p.m. at the church. The Evening Group meets at the homes of members at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month from September through November and January through May; in December and June the meetings are potluck meals at 6 p.m.   Each meeting includes study, worship, and Christian fellowship. We invite all FCC women, visitors, and friends to attend either or both group meetings. Occasional general meetings include members of both groups and other FCC women. At a special brunch in August, we install our officers, who announce service projects and study topics for September through June. In addition to local events, The Christian Church in Kentucky Women’s Ministries Cabinet plans and implements annual events for Disciples Women: fall retreats, a choral retreat, spring conferences, and a quilters’ retreat. Disciples Women may also attend an international meeting, Quadrennial Assembly, in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 2010.

Connie Ford, DWM Worship & Study Director, shares this information on Joshua: A Journey of Faith. Don’t miss the Disciples Women’s Ministries (DWM) in its study of the book of Joshua.  This year, we will examine this controversial, challenging book. Not the easiest book to understand, Joshua is often cited in the justification of violence and vehemently dismissed for the same reason. Many Christians find the book problematic for the moral issues it raises. What meaning can we find today in Joshua? Can women today still read this book as a resource for their faith and their Christian commitment? Yes, we can, and it is hoped that you will take that journey of faith with DWM.
